Gemma opened on the ground floor of the Bowery Hotel not long after the hotel itself debuted in 2007, running an Italian trattoria under executive chef Andrea Taormina with rustic, seasonal cooking and a deep Italian wine list. Its exposed-brick, candlelit dining room draws both hotel guests and a steady stream of East Village and NoHo locals looking for a reliably good plate of pasta. It's become one of the more understated hotel restaurants in the neighborhood, less about the address and more about the kitchen behind it.
