Gage & Tollner

$69.99

Gage & Tollner opened on Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn in 1879, and by 1929 had reportedly shelled some 38 million oysters for generations of Brooklynites, including regulars like Diamond Jim Brady and members of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The restaurant closed in 2004 after a long decline, and its landmark Victorian dining room sat empty or repurposed, at one point housing a T.G.I. Friday's, for over a decade. In 2018, restaurateurs St. John Frizell, Sohui Kim, and Ben Schneider crowdfunded a full revival, reopening the restaurant in April 2021 with its 19th-century interior restored and a menu that honors the original oyster-house tradition. It's now considered one of Brooklyn's great historic-preservation success stories as much as a restaurant.
