Sardi's

Sardi's has been the Theater District's dining room since 1927, when Vincent Sardi Sr. and his wife Jenny opened it on West 44th Street. The walls are the main event: more than 1,300 caricatures of Broadway performers, the first 720 or so drawn by Russian refugee Alex Gard, who was paid in one meal a day. The menu has stayed determinedly old school, steaks and chops and the cannelloni that regulars have been ordering for decades, served in red booths under the eyes of everyone who ever opened a show nearby. The Tony Awards were dreamed up at these tables, which tells you most of what you need to know about the place.
