Rao's

$89.99

Charles Rao, an Italian immigrant, opened what became Rao's on the corner of East 114th Street and Pleasant Avenue in East Harlem in 1896, and the restaurant has stayed in the same extended family's hands through several generations sinc. From Louis Rao, to Anna Pellegrino and Vincent Rao, to current owners Frank Pellegrino and Ronald Straci after Vincent's death in 1999. It's become one of the hardest reservations in New York, an old-school red-sauce joint where most of the dozen or so tables are effectively owned by regulars who've held them for decades, leaving almost nothing open to walk-ins or first-timers. The brand expanded to Las Vegas in 2006 and Los Angeles in 2013, but the tiny original East Harlem dining room remains the one every serious New York diner wants to get into and almost never can.
