PJ Clarke's
P.J. Clarke's has poured drinks from the same Third Avenue corner since 1884, when it operated as a saloon before Irish immigrant Patrick J. Clarke bought it in the early 1900s and put his name on the door. Its small, four-story building became famous as a literal holdout, surviving intact after a 47-story tower rose around it in the late 1960s, though it lost its top two floors in the process. Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and decades of regulars have passed through its doors, and the bar inspired the fictional saloon in the 1945 film The Lost Weekend. Well past its 140th year, it remains one of the last true saloons of old Manhattan still pouring drinks in its original building.
