Lucien opened on First Avenue in the East Village in 1998, founded by Moroccan-born restaurateur Lucien Bahaj, who built the menu around the traditional French cooking of his childhood in the South of France. After his death in 2019, his son Zac took over the restaurant, keeping its casual dress code and unpretentious dining room largely as it was. Over the years it became an unlikely gathering spot for artists and musicians, partly thanks to informal collaborations with a downtown publicist, drawing regulars from Jonas Mekas to Bella Hadid. More than 25 years in, it's kept its reputation as one of downtown's more quietly bohemian French bistros.
