Lord's opened in the West Village from chef Ed Szymanski, a London native, and general manager Patricia Howard, the team behind the tiny British restaurant Dame just blocks away. With several times Dame's footprint, it gave Szymanski room to expand into a fuller British nose-to-tail menu: pig's head terrine, braised tripe with Madeira, and a rotating savory pie program alongside simpler sirloin and chips. It's an elegant reworking of British pub classics rather than the heavier, blander version of the cuisine most Americans expect. Together with Dame, it's helped make a real case for modern British cooking in a city that's historically been skeptical of it.
