Joe Allen has fed Broadway's working actors and stagehands from the same West 46th Street storefront since 1965, when its namesake owner opened it after years behind the bar at P.J. Clarke's. He extended tabs to young, broke performers long before they were famous, building the kind of loyalty that turned it into a Theater District institution rather than just another restaurant near the stage doors. Its most famous feature is the Wall of Flops, a gallery of posters from Broadway shows that closed within a week, a tradition started with the 1965 musical Kelly. Six decades later, it's still the place actors and audiences alike duck into after the curtain falls.
