Irving Farm (Lower East Side)

Irving Farm Coffee traces back to 1996, when two friends named Dave and Steve opened an eight-table cafe at 52 Irving Place in Gramercy, at a time when most New Yorkers still got their coffee from a diner or a deli cart. The company shifted to direct-sourcing and roasting its own beans in 1998, converting a Hudson Valley carriage house into a roastery, and has since expanded into a small chain of Manhattan cafes, including this Lower East Side location. It's one of the earlier specialty coffee roasters in New York, predating the third-wave coffee boom by nearly a decade.
