Heidelberg has run continuously in Yorkville since 1939, when the space reopened under that name after operating earlier as Cafe Vaterland; the Matischak family has owned and run it since 1963, with Eva Matischak taking over in 1988 and her son Andreas in 2018. The menu has stayed largely unchanged for decades, serving authentic German dishes with an Oktoberfest-style atmosphere in a building that dates to 1873 and once housed a music shop and a Prohibition-era speakeasy. It's one of the last true German restaurants left in Yorkville, a neighborhood that was once the heart of the city's German-American community.
