Sal Lamboglia, a Brooklyn native who spent seven years as chef-partner at Bar Primi, opened Cafe Spaghetti in Carroll Gardens as what he calls 'my own version of Italian America,' drawing on a family steeped in the trade - a father who cooked for 40 years, a baker uncle, and another uncle who makes mozzarella and sausage. The restaurant runs a coffee bar serving breakfast sandwiches by day and classic Italian-American dinner service by night, decorated with personal touches like his grandfather's scale from Naples. It's built its reputation on that kind of specific, lived-in nostalgia rather than trend-chasing, aiming for the feeling of eating in a grandmother's kitchen rather than a restaurant.
