Better known simply as Di Palo's, this Little Italy institution began as a small latteria opened in 1910 by Savino Di Palo, an immigrant from Basilicata, and grew into the specialty shop his descendants run today from the corner of Mott and Grand Streets. Wheels of imported cheese, house-made mozzarella, and cured meats fill the counters, alongside olive oils the family imports directly from Italy. Four generations in, it remains one of the last true Italian food shops left in a neighborhood that's mostly moved on from its immigrant roots. It's as much a piece of living history as it is a place to shop.
